Bagrus meridionalus can be found in entire Lake Malawi and it's living in rocky environments where they hide during daytime in big caves. In these caves there are more of them at the same time but there are also different kinds of cichlids like Pseudotropheus crabro, which is often cleaning the skin of Bagrus meridionalis from parasites. However, Pseudotropheus crabro is also specialised in stealing young catfish from the nest (in which are usually thousands of them) as soon as this is a moment unguarded, as well as Mylochromis melanonotus which one also can be found in the neighbourhood of these nests. This catfish is considered to be one of the most delicious fish from the lake according to the local population. These catfish can reach a total length of about 120 cm, the females are bigger than the males. So, if you want to keep these animals you should have a really enormous tank, considering of the size they grow to. In daytime they are usually sleeping in there caves but when it's getting darker they are leaving these holes searching for food and start hunting for cichlids which they find sleeping in these rocky environments. It's obvious that we are dealing here with a species which likes eating fish. |
